American Curl

Care Level: Moderate (ear care is essential) Temperament: Playful, affectionate, people-oriented Diet: Balanced diet (kibble/wet food) – no special requirements Lifespan: 12–16 years Weight: 5–10 lbs (2.3–4.5 kg) Distinct Features: Unique backward-curling ears, expressive walnut-shaped eyes What We Love About This Breed: ➤ Signature curled ears – soft, flexible cartilage that curls back 90–180 degrees (kittens are born with straight ears that curl within days) ➤ Adaptable personality – equally happy in apartments or houses ➤ Moderate energy – playful but not hyperactive ➤ Dog-like devotion – follows owners around but isn’t clingy The American Curl is one of the few cat breeds defined by a natural genetic mutation (first discovered in 1981 in California). Their whimsical ears, which should never be forcibly straightened, require gentle weekly cleaning to prevent wax buildup but are otherwise low-maintenance. These cats strike a perfect balance between playfulness and calm, enjoying interactive toys but also content to lounge nearby. They’re excellent with children and other pets, making them ideal family cats. While not as vocal as Siamese, they communicate with soft trills and chirps. Their coat comes in both longhair and shorthair varieties, with the longhair version having a silky, tangle-resistant texture. Regular brushing (1–2x weekly) keeps shedding under control. Health Notes: Generally healthy, but their unique ear structure can make them more prone to ear infections – regular vet checks recommended. Ideal For: Families or singles who want a friendly, low-drama companion with a distinctive look. Did You Know? All American Curls trace their lineage back to Shulamith, the original stray cat with curled ears found in Lakewood, California.
