Maine Coon
Care Level: Moderate (due to size and grooming needs) Temperament: Gentle, friendly, intelligent Diet: High-protein, large-breed formula (kibble/wet food) Lifespan: 12–15 years Weight: 10–25 lbs (4.5–11.3 kg) – One of the largest domestic cat breeds! Distinct Features: Tufted ears, bushy tail, water-resistant coat What We Love About This Breed: ➤ "Gentle giant" personality – sociable but not clingy ➤ Dog-like traits – can learn tricks, some enjoy playing fetch ➤ Magnificent floof – luxurious, shaggy coat with a raccoon-like tail ➤ Adaptable nature – does well with families, singles, and other pets The Maine Coon is America's native longhaired superstar, known for its impressive size, tufted ears, and outgoing personality. These cats are highly intelligent, playful well into adulthood, and famously good with children and other animals. Despite their substantial grooming needs (brush 2–3x weekly to prevent mats), their semi-water-resistant fur is easier to maintain than many longhaired breeds. They're excellent mousers and retain a kitten-like curiosity throughout their lives. A unique trait is their chirping trill – a melodic sound between a meow and purr. Many Maine Coons enjoy water (some will dip paws in their bowls or join owners in the shower). Health Note: Prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) – reputable breeders screen for this. Ideal For: Active owners who want a low-drama, interactive companion with majestic presence.
