Himalayan
Care Level: High (grooming-intensive) Temperament: Calm, affectionate, gentle Diet: High-quality dry/wet food (prone to weight gain) Lifespan: 9–15 years Weight: 7–12 lbs (3–5.4 kg) Distinct Features: Flattened face (brachycephalic), deep blue eyes, luxuriant coat What We Love About This Breed: ➤ Striking "pointed" coloration – dark ears/face/paws (like a Siamese) with a long Persian coat ➤ Ultra-sweet personality – more laidback than traditional Siamese ➤ Lap cat extraordinaire – thrives on cuddles and quiet companionship ➤ Expressive eyes – their sapphire-blue gaze seems almost human The Himalayan is essentially a colorpoint Persian, combining the best traits of both breeds. Developed in the 1950s by crossing Persians with Siamese, these cats inherit the Persian’s luxurious fur and the Siamese’s striking color pattern—but with a much mellower voice. Their daily grooming needs are substantial—expect to brush their long, silky coat thoroughly to prevent painful mats. Many owners opt for a "lion cut" during summer months for easier maintenance. Due to their flat faces, they require regular eye cleaning to prevent tear staining and may snore or breathe noisily. Himmies are indoor-only cats—their coat isn’t weather-resistant, and their docile nature makes them poor candidates for outdoor life. They adore stable routines and may become stressed in chaotic households. Health Notes: Prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD), respiratory issues, and dental problems—reputable breeders screen for these. Ideal For: Homebodies who want a stunning, low-energy companion and don’t mind extensive grooming. Fun Fact: Despite their name, Himalayans have no connection to the Himalayas—the breed was developed entirely in the U.S. and U.K.
