Burmese
Care Level: Moderate (social needs are high) Temperament: Extroverted, affectionate, "Velcro cat" personality Diet: High-protein diet (prone to obesity if overfed) Lifespan: 10–16 years Weight: 8–12 lbs (3.6–5.4 kg) – Surprisingly heavy for their size! Distinct Features: Muscular build, golden-yellow eyes, satin-like coat What We Love About This Breed: ➤ "Puppy-cat" charm – follows owners everywhere, even on walks (many enjoy harness training) ➤ Velvety short coat – shines like polished mahogany in sable, champagne, blue, or platinum ➤ Endless chatter – not as loud as Siamese, but equally opinionated with a softer voice ➤ Playful into old age – maintains kitten-like energy well into adulthood The Burmese is a people-addicted charmer, originally from Southeast Asia but refined in the U.S. Unlike more aloof breeds, these cats demand to be involved in every activity—whether you're working, cooking, or sleeping (they make excellent weighted blankets!). Their glossy, low-maintenance coat requires only weekly petting with a chamois cloth to maintain its sheen. However, their emotional needs are intensive—they suffer deeply when left alone for long periods. A second Burmese or vocal breed (like a Siamese) makes an ideal companion. Modern Burmese divide into two types: American (stockier, rounder head) British (more angular, "foreign" body type) Health Notes: Prone to feline hyperesthesia syndrome (skin-rolling behavior) and cranial deformities in some bloodlines. Ideal For: Retirees or work-from-home owners who want a shadow-like companion with comedic antics. Did You Know? The original Burmese, Wong Mau, was brought from Burma to San Francisco in 1930—her DNA revealed she was actually a Siamese/Burmese hybrid!
